What makes great teaching?

All throughout this course we have learned all types of different strategies to help us become great teachers who are great at teaching. All of the little strategies we take with us will help us become better for our students, these are a few of the strategies I liked...  1. Text- to -world 2. 3- minute pause 3. Blogging 4. Black-out poem 5. Self- Assessment  With using all of these strategies it will only help me become a better teacher for my students. Text- to - word is connecting real world activities to our personal lives which will help the students be able to make better connections. 3- minute pause is where us teachers give our students a few questions after a lesson to see if they understand what was being taught. Blogging has shown us the major problems within the schooling system and how we can help fix them by listening to our peers' opinions. Black- out poem can show the students that everyone's work can be completely different, but they are all correct and ...

What is worth learning?

Image
In this module we learned about the three different types of curriculum used based on many different factors. The first one is Hidden Curriculum, this is when we are taught something unintentional, students learn something from the explicit curriculum. Explicit Curriculum is something intentionally taught from the teacher. Lastly, Null Curriculum is lessons omitted from the explicit curriculum. While all of these are teaching students, we can't control everything. For example we cannot control how a student interprets the lesson we are teaching or what they believe what is worth learning for themselves. As a future teacher I have been taught so far in my classes that everyone is worthy of learning and that we need to teach what is said in the textbooks. While I don't disagree with that, I also believe that there is some stuff our textbooks don't have but I may feel is necessary for them to learn. As stated in "Doing Right By Our Students", we need to evaluate wha...

It's 2022, why are schools still segregated?

Image
It is 2022, not the 1900's. We have definitely come a long way with desegregation from what it was like before. With that being said it is still not 100% desegregated like a lot of people would assume would happen by now. It is 2022 and with all of the new technology it seems like that is everyone's main focus, learning how to do the next "in thing" regarding technology. I think that segregation is so far in the past people don't realize that it is still an issue today and people are being affected by it. In the past modules we talked about poverty and how that affects school systems, I think that poverty is a big factor weighing in on segregated schools. In "Schools are still segregated, and black children are paying a price" by Emma Garcia, she states that "Black children are more than twice as likely as white children to attend high-poverty schools" I think this is very important information because obviously children can't change their...

what lengths am I willing to go to in order to do right by every child?

Image
This topic, what lengths am I willing to go to in order to do right by every child is a fairly easy topic to talk about. I have previously stated in other blogs that a teacher can be the most consistent and healthy thing in their life. Going through my college courses I have been able to create a lot of good relationships with my teachers which I think is very special to have. This also helped me realize that that teachers aren't just there to teach, we are there to guide them and form relationships with them so that they are comfortable coming to us for help or if they are scared. When reading "I won't learn from you!" in this weeks module, she stated " they turned willed refusal to learn into failure to learn." which is evidence to my previous statement which is you have to get to their level, they have to respect you and love you to want to learn from you. Looking back on my elementary teachers I don't remember specific things I learned from each tea...

Is Schooling Equitable

Image
Is schooling equitable? You can ask many teachers this question and the majority will say "no". Schooling is not equitable everywhere at every school for many different reasons. Schools in low-income areas get the short end of the stick, they are probable in a bad area of town with a high crime rate and with children being exposed to that every day, it might bring them down and not want to focus on school. With schools being in the "bad areas" they are subject to lower teacher incomes an d lower access to technology and new advancements which can affect the learning, unlike a school in a rich neighborhood, which put them at a disadvantage. With some kids having family members involved in crime that might be all the kid knows which can lead to disciplinary actions which can just lead to far worse outcomes, in the article "How school systems make criminals of Black youth", she stated, "Multiple studies link disciplinary exclusion to dropping out - or w...

How do we talk about issues that matter?

Image
Talking about issues that matter can be tricky in certain situations in a classroom setting. A lot of topics that matter these days can be hard to talk about or controversial, however most issues need to be talked about and addressed in class. We may never know what our students are struggling with unless they reach out to us, and not every student wants their problems to be known.   Looking back on my school experience whenever my teachers would try to talk about issues that matter it would be very uncomfortable or boring. Some of my teachers would either put on a long video for us to watch which no one would pay attention to, or she would ask us to raise our hand to discuss it in front of the class. Both of those tactics never get anyone anywhere. Instead, in my future classroom I might show a short engaging video briefly discussing the topic then having each student write their opinion, question, or experience on a piece of paper that I can anonymously read out loud ...

Purpose of Schools

Image
The purpose of school especially elementary school is to educate, learn new skills, and be creative. Elementary school is the first time for many that you are away from your family and forced to make friends and try new things. The purpose of school is to educate, elementary is where we learn all of the basics we will use for the rest of our lives such as not to cheat, to always try your best, and learn to share. These things can be a big change for some students especially if they are only children. School is also a place to learn new skills such as how to color in the lines, memorizing the abc's and the colors, sharing, how to hold a pencil, and even discipline. School is also where a lot of students go to feel safe, where they might get their only meal for the day, and consistency.     The marginalized students in schools are those who are questioning their identity and those who feel as if they don't fit in. Whatever their situation may be they are not ...
