About me introduction

     Hi my name is Rachel and I will be a junior at Texas State University. My major is elementary education and I hope to get a minor in special education. I have always wanted to be a teacher since I was little but recently switched my major to education. I have always wanted to become a teacher because I have always had a love for kids and helping them achieve their goals. I have a cousin with autism who lives in the Virgin Islands where they have limited access to average education let alone special education. I hope that I will be able to make a difference in the special education field wherever I may end up. 

     I am planning on teaching first or second grade the first few years and then switching over to special education. I have always loved playing and teaching kids my whole life, I am looking forward to being a consistency in my students lives. I can't wait to see them grow and achieve their goals. I am not sure on where I would like to teach yet, but I know I want to teach at a public education school and somewhere in the states. I hope to create a safe environment for my students where they can be themselves and so that they will feel safe and comfortable coming to me about anything they might need. 

    Some of my favorite tiktok teachers are @meetmissalina I really like this tiktoker because she tells us tips about classroom management, what to do if students are struggling, as well as doing teacher ootd. One of her videos that stuck out to me is one where she is telling us that if they hurt themselves but don't need to go to the nurse she has "magic lotion" that she will put on their wound and it will magically make them better. Another tiktoker is @shybeeeeee she is such a fun spirit to watch and does all kinds of teaching videos as well as funny tiktoks where she is telling us what her first graders told her today. One of her videos that I really like is a video where she tells us her teacher hack, she silences her classroom immediately by playing animal asmr where they are eating fruit.

 In this module we learned about the three different types of curriculum used based on many different factors. The first one is Hidden Curriculum, this is when we are taught something unintentional, students learn something from the explicit curriculum. Explicit Curriculum is something intentionally taught from the teacher. Lastly, Null Curriculum is lessons omitted from the explicit curriculum. While all of these are teaching students, we can't control everything. For example we cannot control how a student interprets the lesson we are teaching or what they believe what is worth learning for themselves. How do we talk about issues that matter?

  Talking about issues that matter can be tricky in certain situations in a classroom setting. A lot of topics that matter these days can be hard to talk about or controversial, however most issues need to be talked about and addressed in class. We may never know what our students are struggling with unless they reach out to us, and not every student wants their problems to be known.   Looking back on my school experience whenever my teachers would try to talk about issues that matter it would be very uncomfortable or boring. Some of my teachers would either put on a long video for us to watch which no one would pay attention to, or she would ask us to raise our hand to discuss it in front of the class. Both of those tactics never get anyone anywhere. Instead, in my future classroom I might show a short engaging video briefly discussing the topic then having each student write their opinion, question, or experience on a piece of paper that I can anonymously read out loud ...

It's 2022, why are schools still segregated?

 It is 2022, not the 1900's. We have definitely come a long way with desegregation from what it was like before. With that being said it is still not 100% desegregated like a lot of people would assume would happen by now. It is 2022 and with all of the new technology it seems like that is everyone's main focus, learning how to do the next "in thing" regarding technology. I think that segregation is so far in the past people don't realize that it is still an issue today and people are being affected by it. In the past modules we talked about poverty and how that affects school systems, I think that poverty is a big factor weighing in on segregated schools.
