what lengths am I willing to go to in order to do right by every child?

This topic, what lengths am I willing to go to in order to do right by every child is a fairly easy topic to talk about. I have previously stated in other blogs that a teacher can be the most consistent and healthy thing in their life. Going through my college courses I have been able to create a lot of good relationships with my teachers which I think is very special to have. This also helped me realize that that teachers aren't just there to teach, we are there to guide them and form relationships with them so that they are comfortable coming to us for help or if they are scared. When reading "I won't learn from you!" in this weeks module, she stated "they turned willed refusal to learn into failure to learn." which is evidence to my previous statement which is you have to get to their level, they have to respect you and love you to want to learn from you. Looking back on my elementary teachers I don't remember specific things I learned from each teacher, but I do remember Mrs. Munn coming to my volleyball games and Mrs. Smiley asking if I need to talk to her about my home problems. Little things that we might not think matters can stick with a child for a lifetime, we need to be going above and beyond to make sure all of our children are doing amazing. Even if we have different backgrounds or beliefs we need to be sympathetic and put ourselves in their shoes. I believe that the importance of teaching it being open for them and make sure they know that we are on their side.

  1. Hi Rachel, I really liked reading your blog post. In order to go lengths for our students, I agree, it is important to make connections with them on a daily basis, no matter how small. Like you said sometimes we are the only consistent and healthy thing in their lives so it is more than important to not make those students situations any worse. Especially culturally diverse students who are already at times placed at an unfortunate disadvantage when it comes to schooling. Great job, I think you summed up the main ideas of the module really well.

    1. Hi kayla thank you for replying to my blog, I think that we need to think more about the students well being over just focusing on learning.

  2. Hello Rachel,
Very well said! It is important to see things from your students perspective and not put yourself on a pedestal just because you are the educator. Like you mentioned, it sticks with students when their teachers create safe environments and checks up on their students one by one. Everyone comes from different backgrounds, beliefs, or communities, but it is our job to make everyone feel respected and connected. We need to be socially conscious, especially in this type of environment. Your blog was very interesting and I agreed with your perspective of this module/topic.
